Description of the Choctaw Bass

The Choctaw bass, scientifically known as Micropterus punctulatus, is a provisional new species of black bass found in the upper panhandle of Florida. This member of the sunfish family possesses an elongate body and a large mouth, with the upper jaw extending under the rear half of the eye. Its body showcases a range of colors, from silver-white to brassy green, adorned with dark olive mottling along the back and upper side.

One of their distinctive features is the presence of a black stripe along its side, accompanied by rows of discrete black spots on the lower side and a black caudal spot. These markings add to the allure and uniqueness of this species, making it a sight to behold.

Naming and Discovery of the Choctaw Bass

The name "Choctaw bass" was chosen to honor the Native American tribe that once inhabited the area where this new species was found. The scientific name, Micropterus punctulatus, is derived from the Choctaw language, with "haiaka" meaning "revealed" or "out-of-hiding."

The discovery of this species was not an easy task, as it closely resembles other black bass species. It was during genetic testing in 2007 that scientists from the Florida Wildlife Conservation (FWC) encountered a DNA profile that did not match any known native black bass species. Further analysis led them to the realization that they had stumbled upon a new species. The FWC scientists compared the genetic composition of this species to other black bass species and concluded that it was indeed a unique and distinct species.

Habitat and Distribution

This member of the sunfish family can be found in the western and north-central drainages of Florida, specifically in river systems such as the Perdido River, Escambia River, Blackwater River, Yellow River, and the Choctawhatchee River. These fish prefer ravel-bottomed runs and pools in creeks and small to medium rivers.

The habitat preference of the Choctaw bass is significant in understanding its conservation needs. They tend to avoid fast-moving water and are commonly found in stagnant parts of river systems or streams where sediment accumulates. Their proximity to the coastline further adds to their unique ecological niche.

Conservation Efforts

Since their discovery, scientists and conservationists have been dedicated to ensuring the long-term survival and health of this species. The main threats to the Choctaw bass come from the spotted bass and the Alabama bass, which are closely related species. The introduction of these bass species outside their native range can lead to interbreeding and a decrease in their number of purebred.

To address these conservation concerns, the FWC has implemented early conservation practices to protect the population and habitat of these creatures. By monitoring and managing the presence of other bass species in the same habitats, they aim to prevent the decline of their population.

Similar Species

They shares many morphological features with other bass species, making it challenging to distinguish them solely based on appearance. However, careful examination of specific characteristics can help differentiate the Choctaw bass from its counterparts. These include counting the number of scales in certain areas, observing the fin ray counts, and examining the number of gill rakers.

While this beautiful creature may have similar physical attributes to other black bass species, its genetic makeup sets it apart as a distinct and separate species. DNA testing is the most accurate method for identifying and confirming their presence.
